Babies are Born to Breastfeed


The New York Statewide Breastfeeding Coalition is an organization made up of lactation consultants, health care providers, regional breastfeeding coalitions and the major statewide maternal and child health organizations.

MISSION   GOALS   ACTIVITIES

The New York Statewide Breastfeeding Coalition, Inc. mission is to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding.

Our goals: 

● to serve as an articulate spokesperson for families, mothers and babies 
● to serve as a clearinghouse for the exchange of information and ideas
● to advocate for public policy that will make the breastfeeding experience a positive one
● to seek actively to include community partners to assist with our efforts

Our vision:

All barriers to successful breastfeeding will be eliminated so that New York State will be a perfect place for mothers and babies.

The Coalition was formed by a Steering Committee whose members participated in the United States Breastfeeding Committee National Conference of State Breastfeeding Coalitions in January 2006 in Washington D.C

SUCCESSES

2010 Successes

The United States Breastfeeding Coalition Conference, January 2010

NYSBC representatives attended the USBC National Coalitions Conference in Washington DC.  The NYSBC reported to the USBC on the results of the Nursing Mother's in the Workplace mini-grant in addition to having a poster display.  Visits were made to congressional representatives to lobby for legislation that supports breastfeeding. 

The Business Case for Breastfeeding Toolkit

At least 18 businesses in NYS have some level of workplace lactation support program as a direct result of the Business Case for Breastfeeding Toolkit training.  Visit the section "What We Do" for more detail.  Large poster displays were created for use by members interested in promoting the creation of worksite lactation programs in their community.  They are accessable across the state.  If interested contact us at nysbcoalition@aol.com

Annual Meeting, August 2010

Our first annual meeting was held during WBW at the SUNY Albany School of Public Health.  After participating in the webcast, Breastfeeding Grand Rounds: Promoting Breastfeeding Friendly Practices in Hospitals", there were presentations from NYS DOH Bureau of Chronic Disease Prevention, Division of Nutrition, and NYC DOHMH Bureau of Maternial, Infant, and Reproductive Health. 

Business Case for Breastfeeding mini grant recipients presented their projects.

    

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, October 2010

Teams across the states joined the American Cancer Society's walk during October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  The team Breastfeeding for Breast Health participated in walks throughout the state including Hudson Valley, Albany, Dutchess County, and NYC. 

                                     

 

2009 Successes

Breastfeeding Bill of Rights is signed into law.

Awarded a $10,000 grant from HCDI to implement the Business Case for Breastfeeding in New York State.

Awarded a $3,000 mini-grant from USBC to provide funds to 2 coalitions to promote the NYS Nursing Mothers in the Workplace Law

2008 Successes

Nine representatives attended the USBC State Coalitions Conference in January 2008.

                                         

Worked with the NYS Department of Health in the implementation of the breastfeeding component of their Physical Activity and Nutrition grant.

Coordinated World Breastfeeding Week Walks throughout NYS

2007 Successes

The first activity of the Coalition was to participate in the United States Breastfeeding
Committee State Coalitions Conference in Jan. 2006       

January 30, 2007 - Kick off event at the NYS Legislature

Coalition Task Force Members represent the coalition at conferences 

Coordinated World Breastfeeding Week Walks throughout NYS and simultaneous with events that were occurring around the Country

Worked with the Department of Health in preparing their Physical Activity and Nutrition grant application for the CDC

COMMITTEES

The Legislative/Public Policy Committee

Serves to promote public awareness of new and existing Federal and State legislation involving Breastfeeding and to plan and implement activities relevant to the Coalition’s position on the legislation. To review State and Federal Regulations and guidelines that affects Breastfeeding and develops position papers for Board approval.

The Nomination Committee

Serves to gather nominations for vacant board officer and At-Large Board positions and prepares the ballot for voting on those positions.

The Finance Committee

Serves to prepare a budget for the fiscal year, review all staff and/or consultant salaries and present recommendations to the full Board for approval; the Committee will be chaired by the Treasurer; to provide an outside accounting agency with the appropriate information in order to complete a corporate tax return (990) for the end of each fiscal year.

Conference Committee

Serves to plan, organize and implement all aspects of the Annual Conference/Meeting.
